45th Reunion Wins Praise

Thirty-seven classmates of the Girard High Class of 1960 met August 12, 2005 to get reacquainted, share pictures and stories, laugh about old times, and compliment one another.  The small group allowed much mingling but brought disappointment that more could not attend.  It also created a determination to recruit every graduate to the fiftieth reunion in 2010.

The Friday night event at Leo’s Restaurant in Howland was planned by a dedicated committee of 6 (1960 names), Gail Morgan, Pat Zalac, Judy Bixler, Betty Charles, Carol Etherington and Connie Faiver.  The girls met monthly at Amen Corner in Girard to set up what was praised as the reunion with the best interaction among the attendees.

Among the celebrants was Joan Graham, attending for the first time, and class couples Judy Bixler and Floyd Frankford, Louise Maioriana and Joe Aurilio, and Marsha Powers and Dick Ambrose.

Traveling from out-of-state were 21 classmates including Pat Planton from Connecticut, Rick Mitulinsky from Florida, Jim Ward from California,  and Joe Horvat from Texas.

Former Senior Class President Joe Concannon was the Master of Ceremonies.  Joe gave a tribute to the 16 classmates (now 17) who have passed away since graduation.  He also planned a Saturday morning mass for former St. Rose students that included a tour of the school, a picture, and refreshments.

A second night of celebrating was held on August 13 with over 20 attending an informal get together at Jake’s Place in Girard.  Adding to the fun that night was Bill Carney.

Washington Ave. Classmates Reunite at the 45th

2010 Committee Set

A show of hands during the dinner program at last year’s reunion resulted in a group of volunteers committed to planning the heralded Fiftieth Reunion Weekend in 2010.  The committee is (1960 names) Karen Battin, Judy Bixler, Janice Collins, Carol Etherington, Pat Godec, Marsha Powers, Ron Robinson, and Tina Siciliano.  The group has already received numerous suggestions including a picnic at Todd Park, a tour of Girard High, and volunteers to host out of town attendees.

The committee will spend the next four years gathering both email and postal mailing addresses to insure that every classmate receives advance information and an invitation.

From the Editor

Greetings Classmates!  I hope you enjoy this special Class of ’60 alumni edition of your Girard Hi Journal.  I enjoyed being editor in our Senior year, and got inspired to do it again following our 45th reunion celebration last August.  As was the case throughout the country, attendance by 60-somethings was down for high school reunions, and less than 1/3 attended ours.  Retirement changes, extended family obligations, and health issues kept many away this time.  But our committee for 2010 hopes to change that!

You’ll be receiving periodic GHS Journals throughout the next four years, provided we know where to send them.  Please keep us aware of your mailing and email addresses so we can let you know the plans as they evolve.  We’d also like your input so the celebration will be one you’ll want attend.

Our committee already has additional volunteers submitting photos, designing nametags, planning mini-reunions, and searching for “lost” classmate addresses.  We’ll be looking for donations of souvenirs, a logo design, more photos and even cartoons.  Don’t be modest.  We know many talents that were hidden while we were at GHS have surfaced in the past 45 years.  Let us hear from you so we can celebrate the successes of the Class of Sixty!

For starters, here’s a contest for you….

One of our classmates came to the reunion sporting a brand new thigh tattoo (picture at right).  Who is it?  Send in your guess and we’ll identify the secret thigh in our next edition.

We encourage you to send letters to the editor, reunion ideas and/or information about yourself or other classmates.  Let us hear from you by email to ghsclassofsixty@yahoo.com or send US mail to me at 109 Loch Haven Lane, Cary, NC  27511.  Although we’ll be using 1960 names throughout our publications, send mail to me as Marsha Powers Ambrose.

GHS Today

In 1960, our high school had 750 students in grades 8-12.  GHS currently serves nearly 1000 in an aged  building that is in dire straits.  An interview of GHS Principal Ronald Ragozine  revealed a dilemma with no clear solution.  Repairs such as the $40,000 that was spent recently on the heating system are too common.

The State of Ohio has determined that remodeling is not an option and will not provide any funds to do so.  The state will however contribute 76% of the estimated $23 million needed to build a new school if Girard residents fund the other 24% through taxes.

This would mean the demolition of the existing building and the securing of 40 acres of property for a combination Junior and Senior High.  According to the Superintendent’s office, property located on Shannon Road is currently under consideration.  Previous possibilities Todd Park and Liberty Park have been eliminated .  A proposal to buy Mahoning Country Club property was rejected by voters in a 2005 election.

The school board expects to go back to the voters in August.  A tour of GHS is hopefully in the plans for our 2010 reunion, but the big question is where will the school be located.  Stay tuned!
