Feb 27, 2011 afternoon cruise and picnic in Fort Lauderdale

On Feb 27, 2011 a group of GHS Grads from the Class of '60 got together for an afternoon of fun and frolicking in Fort Lauderdale at Ona and Ed DeChant's Casa Del Sol Resort/Marina.

Pete and Phyllis Chila were guests of the resort for two weeks and scheduled to leave for Ohio Feb 28.  Plans were set for a mini reunion early on.   Pete was in Fort Lauderdale for his annual YSU Fraternity get together which included GHS classmate Anthony Carderio.

Four days prior to Saturday Pete began to complain of shortness of breath.  As the week progressed it got worse and finally on Thursday he was persuaded to go to the ER for evaluation.

Everyone thought "heart" of course.  The ER at Holy Cross Hospital quickly took action and within a few hours had ruled out heart and decided that Pete had some internal bleeding and his red count was seriously low.  Pete takes a blood thinner and in this case it was too thin.

Two units of Blood had Pete back on his feet and feeling normal within 24 hours.  He was back in his apartment by Friday afternoon.

The mini Reunion went on as scheduled.  Pat Godec and husband Tom arrived about 11:30 a.m. followed by Dick Dillon, then Wolf and wife Pam.   At 1:30 the group boarded Ed's fishing boat for an upfront view of Fort Lauderdale from waterside.

This was followed by a cook out and round table discussion.   It was fantastic.

Plans are being made for a larger follow up in early April which hopefully will be a full weekend.  We are trying to make arrangements for overnight stays now.  Please contact eddechant@earthlink.net if you would like to attend.

Snow birds welcome.

Below is a note from Pete

It was interesting to note that six (6) months after the 50th reunion of GHS 1960 in August, a “mini-reunion” of sorts was held at Casa Del Sol in Fort Lauderdale. Maybe this one could be identified as “GHS 1960—50.5 Reunion!”

Ed and Ona DeChant hosted a group that included Dick Dillon, Pat (Godec) and husband Tom Cicatiello, Wolfgang and Pam Mathieson, and Pete and Phyllis Chila.

Dick Dillon has not changed at all in 50 years. He still looks like he did at GHS. (Although I did tell him that I did not think that Mr. Boyee would approve of the moustache as acceptable for the dress code—sorry….old school administrator speaking…we tend to do that alot)

An afternoon and early evening of non-stop conversation and camaraderie among all of us really made for an enjoyable time. “Dr. Wolf”, having been informed of my condition, was kind enough to provide back up transfusion medicine. Take my word for it….Kitchen Sink Red Table Wine beats B-Positive anytime!

The one comment heard most was that there was plenty of time here to really get together and talk.

As I understand it, plans are afoot for a similar get together in April. For those who are in the area, please take advantage of an opportunity to “reconnect” with classmates. Believe me, it will do you a world of good

Thanks Ed and Ona for a wonderful day. It was great seeing you and the other classmates. The boat ride was so enjoyable and the sites  incredible and  your grilling was superb. ----Dick

Note from Pat

Just wanted to let classmates know, we spent Sat. as guests of Ed and Ona DeChant in Ft. Lauderdale. Also, Pete and Phyllis Chila, Wolf and Pam Mathiesen, and Dick Dillon were there. Had a great time gabbing and on Ed's boat. Ed and Ona are outstanding hosts. We're hoping for another get-gether for the Fl people in April. We all agreed that the reunion was the best of all time and probably in the whole universe! And we are the best class!!!   Pat.

Pete looks very good for just getting out of the ER less than 20 hours earlier

Most of us had not seen Richard since Graduation Day more than 50 years ago.  He still runs a 7 minute mile.

Wolf opens the wine as Pete, Phyllis and Dic look on.

Phyllis Chila, Dick Dillon and Pat talk of high school pranks.
