GHS Class of 1960

Fiftieth Reunion

Set for August 27-29

The milestone 50th GHS Class of ’60 reunion is shaping up as a weekend of events that promises to have something for everyone and offer plenty of time to reconnect with classmates.

It begins on Friday with a “Pep Rally” at Amen Corner on Main Street. GHS has a great football team, and those who want to see the new artificial turf and refurbished stadium can attend the first football game of the year, returning to Amen Corner after the game for a buffet and continued socializing.

Saturday morning events start at 10am with either a tour of the Barnheisel House or golf at Mahoning Country Club.  The afternoon includes tours of both the old and new GHS buildings beginning at 1pm.

Saturday night is the traditional reunion event complete with class photos and many surprises.  Vernon’s Café is the site on Rt. 422 near Eastwood Mall.  It is large enough to handle the expected crowd, and convenient to several chain hotels for those coming from out of town.

Despite a full schedule, there will still be time for individual get-togethers  for breakfasts or lunches.  A Saturday night after party at Jake Barnhart’s bar was a success in 2005 and will probably be repeated this year as well.

$50 per person covers food and party expenses for the official weekend events listed on your invitation.  Class photos at $10 each, football tickets at $6 each and GHS T-shirts at $7 each can be paid in advance along with your registration.  Drinks at all events are optional and at your own cost.

An email list of over 66 classmates has elicited lots of enthusiasm for the reunion.  A great turnout is expected.  Don’t miss it!

Tours of Old and New

Included in Reunion Plans

Construction has been ongoing the past nine months for a brand new combination school on Shannon Road that will service over 800 students in grades 7-12.  The property also abuts Ward, Gary and Highland Avenues.  Funds for the project  came primarily from the state after determining that maintenance costs for the original building were no longer justified.

The new junior high and high school structure with administration offices between will be close enough to completion to allow tours of both buildings  on Saturday afternoon August 28 beginning at the Ward Avenue school at 1pm.

After initially hoping that an organization such as the YMCA might purchase and use the newer gymnasium that faces Ward Ave., the school board recently voted to demolish the entire structure.  The Class of ’60 may be one of the last to tour it.  Plans for the property following demolition are uncertain at this time.
